Porter, Texas Is Growing: Why More People Are Choosing to Call the Area Home

Porter, Texas is quickly becoming one of the communities to watch in East Montgomery County. Once known primarily for its quiet, rural surroundings, the Porter and New Caney area is seeing significant residential and commercial growth as more people look for convenient places to live outside of central Houston.

According to U.S. Census Bureau data reported by Community Impact, the combined population of the 77357 and 77365 ZIP codes, which cover much of New Caney and Porter, increased from approximately 64,176 residents in 2020 to 84,010 residents in 2024. That represents growth of about 30% in just four years.

For residents of Wildwood Pointe, that growth means even more shopping, dining, entertainment, employment opportunities, and conveniences are continuing to arrive close to home.

A Convenient Location Near Houston

One of Porter's biggest advantages is its location.

With access to I-69/US-59, FM 1314, and the Grand Parkway (TX-99), residents can easily travel throughout Northeast Houston and Montgomery County. Kingwood, Humble, New Caney, Spring, The Woodlands, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and Houston are all within reach.

Nearby Valley Ranch, located at the intersection of the Grand Parkway and I-69, has become an important hub for shopping, dining, business, and entertainment in East Montgomery County. The 1,400-acre development continues to expand and is helping transform this once-rural portion of Montgomery County into a growing residential and commercial destination.

Employment Opportunities Near Porter

Porter's location also places Wildwood Pointe near several of the area's major employers and employment centers.

New Caney Independent School District is one of East Montgomery County's largest employers, with more than 2,100 employees. Other major employers in the area include the Walmart Distribution Center, Walmart, Kroger, Kennedy Fabricating/Rig Services, Home Depot, and a growing collection of industrial, logistics, healthcare, retail, and service businesses.

Healthcare is another important source of employment nearby. HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, located just south of Porter, has grown into a major medical center serving Northeast Houston and the surrounding communities. The hospital reported more than 2,500 colleagues in 2026 and continues to expand its facilities and services.

The Grand Parkway also provides convenient access toward major employment centers in Spring and The Woodlands, including the ExxonMobil campus.

Shopping and Dining Continue to Expand

Residents don't have to travel far for everyday shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.

Valley Ranch Town Center offers a large collection of national retailers, restaurants, services, and entertainment options just north of Porter. The center includes shopping, dining, and a Cinemark XD theater, along with community events throughout the year.

Growth isn't slowing down either. In 2026, plans were announced for the new Commerce District at Valley Ranch, a 55-acre development expected to include approximately 400,000 square feet of commercial space, additional restaurants and retail, offices, residential development, and a new H-E-B supermarket.

Growth Brings More Opportunities to Porter

The growth happening throughout Porter and New Caney is bringing new neighborhoods, businesses, restaurants, healthcare facilities, schools, shopping centers, and entertainment destinations to East Montgomery County.

New Caney ISD itself describes the district as one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas, now serving more than 19,000 students across 21 campuses.

For people moving to the Houston area, Porter provides an attractive combination: access to major highways and employment centers while maintaining the wooded surroundings and more relaxed atmosphere that have long defined this part of Montgomery County.
